Why This Grader Is Different
There are plenty of free Etsy listing graders. Here is what ours does that made us build another one.
Your listing stays in your browser
The grading runs on your own computer, in the page you are looking at. Your title, tags, and description are never sent to us, never stored, and never logged. Sharing a link keeps that promise too: it carries your title and tags in the part of the address browsers never send to a server, and it leaves your description behind entirely.
It grades four parts, not just your tags
A listing fails as a whole, so this grades it as one. Your title, your tags, your description, and how distinctive your writing is each get their own band, which tells you which of the four is actually holding the listing back. A strong title never hides a thin description behind an average.
No score to chase
We do not print a grade out of 100. A single number turns sellers into score-chasers who rewrite listings that were already selling. You get the specific things Etsy's own rules make true, and nothing invented on top of them. When a listing is genuinely fine, the grader says so and tells you to leave it alone.
It catches copy that reads like every other listing
"Perfect for any occasion." "Makes a great gift for." These phrases now appear in an enormous share of Etsy listings, which is exactly why they stopped working. We check your description against a catalog of them and name the ones you are leaning on, so you can hear how your listing sounds next to everyone else's.
What This Grader Looks For
Your title against Etsy's real limits
Etsy cuts titles off at 140 characters, and its 2026 guidance asks you to stay under 15 words: short and scannable, not packed with keywords. A 138-character title is perfectly legal and still works against that advice, so the grader tells you when yours has drifted.
Wording Etsy bans outright
Phrases like "free shipping", "sale", and "best seller" are not allowed in Etsy titles. They are easy to miss because nothing stops you typing them, and the listing simply performs worse. The grader flags each one it finds.
All 13 tag slots
Tag count, the 20-character cap, duplicates, near-duplicates Etsy already matches for you, and single-word tags that face the most competition. If your title advertises an occasion your tags never mention, the grader names it.
What your description is missing
The first 160 characters are your search snippet, so opening with "Welcome to my shop" spends them on nothing. The grader also looks for the two things buyers ask about most and sellers leave out most: size and how long shipping takes.
Whether it reads like everyone else's
"Perfect for any occasion." "Makes a great gift for." These stock phrases now appear in an enormous share of listings, which means they no longer make yours stand out. The grader points out the ones you are leaning on.
Etsy Listing Questions, Answered
Does anything I paste get uploaded?
No. The grader runs entirely in your browser. Your title, tags, and description are never uploaded, stored, or sent to a server, and you do not need an account. We do keep a count of how often the tool gets used, which records how many tags you entered, whether you included a description, and when someone adds a suggested tag idea. It never records the words themselves.
Why is there no overall score out of 100?
Because a single number pushes sellers to chase the number instead of selling. It is the most common complaint about scoring tools: sellers rewrite listings that were already doing well just to move a grade. This grader reports each part of your listing separately, and when your listing is fine it tells you to leave it alone.
Why does the grader not show search volume for my tags?
Etsy does not publish search volume. Third-party estimates disagree with each other by as much as a hundred times, and Etsy's terms prohibit scraping the site to work them out. Rather than invent a number, the grader sticks to rules and patterns that are verifiably true. To gauge real demand, use Etsy's own Marketplace Insights and the search bar's autocomplete suggestions.
Why can't I just paste my listing's URL?
Reading a live listing automatically requires approved access to Etsy's developer interface, and their terms specifically prohibit scraping pages to get around that. Pasting your text has neither problem, works right now, and keeps everything inside your browser.
What does the grader check?
Your title against Etsy's 140-character cap, Etsy's under-15-words guidance, repetition, and promotional language Etsy bans. It also nudges you toward roughly 70 characters, which is our own readability rule of thumb rather than an Etsy limit. Your tags against the 13-tag limit, the 20-character cap, duplicates, near-duplicates, and single-word tags. Your description for length, the greeting that wastes your search snippet, missing sizes, and missing shipping details. It also flags stock phrases that make a listing read like every other one.
